I want to return to Fraser Castle as soon as I can.” I felt Dima’s eyes watching me as Mishcon continued writing. “Oh Mishcon, please draw up the necessary papers. I want Dima on my staff as my equerry and private secretary.” Dima smiled. “It will be my honour, your Imp… Forts.” ********************** Operation Pied Piper Part 112c The Funeral Davy continues the story Had I misjudged Theodora? Or was she playing a clever game? My stomach churned at the thought she could be deceiving me. Here we were, walking along as if we were best friends, arm in arm. What do I mean? I suppose she had always been pleasant and friendly to me, or was it just a means to an end? Getting her closer to Forts? I was finding it all hard to reconcile. I knew that she had tried to throw her weight about ordering him to go to London. I was confused. I didn’t know what to think. As her arm squeezed me again, I couldn’t stop myself thinking back, it hadn’t taken her long to get her arms round him, either, back at the first Grand Ball. Actually, now, come to think of it, I didn’t much care for her comment earlier that we could swap notes about him, what did that mean? But what really got my goat was she had never told me she had had sex with him. In fact, everyone seemed to know it was Fort’s baby she was carrying, but she had never mentioned it at all. Was she about to now? I glanced back up towards Forts’ apartments; he was at the window, seemingly watching us. I waved up to him and got a friendly smile and wave back. Theodora turned and waved too, before moving her arm from my waist and gripping my arm even more tightly, leading me towards the fountain. “Davy, it’s so lovely to have you both here.” “I had to come, for Forts.” “Oh, we would have looked after him.” “That sounds like you don’t want me here” God, she smiled at me, what did that mean? We sat down on the marble bench surrounding the fountain; she leant back, obviously enjoying a brief stretch. “Well?” “Oh Davy, don’t be silly, we can share him.” She hugged my arm harder. “Share him? Sorry, I don’t know what you mean? Forts wants to return to Fraser Castle as soon as he can. He obviously hasn’t told you. He gave me this ring, too.” I held out my hand. “It is two entwined letter D’s’, Davy and Drageon. When he gave it to me, he has asked me to be his partner for the rest of his life.” “How sweet, so you will be a Duchess too, we can be like sisters. I am not sure what the family will say, though.” Before I could say anything, Theodora took my hand and looked at the ring. “It’s lovely, I see you’re wearing his diamond Draco Constellation ring too. You must be very pleased with yourself; a pauper to a prince.” “Pardon?” I nearly choked. “Oh, Davy, you must forgive me, that’s not what I meant. You must help me with my English. I keep giving the wrong meaning; you know, mixing up my words, using the wrong words, that sort of thing.” She let go of my hand, giving a little giggle. I watched her face for any sign of emotion, there was none, just another squeeze of my hand. “Your English is perfect Theodora, I thought Forts said you were raised here in England?” She didn’t answer, just made an “ummm” noise. What was she playing at? I couldn’t stop myself. “Theodora, what’s this all about? Please don’t take me for a fool.” Her face changed, she let go of my arm and her hands cupped her obvious baby bump, drawing my eyes to it. “You know this baby is his, don’t you?” Her spat words plunged into me. “Theodora, yes, I know, Forts told me what had happened.” Her eyes narrowed as she stared at me. “And you still want him? Even though he cheated on you?” I stood up. “Your Grace, I don’t like your tone, or you maligning the man I love. I will leave you and your bile to the sunshine.” I began to walk away; I felt her get up behind me and start following, her arm reaching for mine. “Davy, I am sorry, please come back.” She began to sob, “He didn’t cheat on you Davy, I tricked him. I so wanted him to want me, but it’s you he loves. Any fool can see that.” I stopped. ankara escort “Davy, please stay with me, Please Davy. We don’t want to fall out.” I turned to face her; I could see how upset she was. I wasn’t feeling too good myself. “Please sit down, I am so sorry, I really want us to be friends.” She forced a smile as we both sat down again, gripping my hand tightly once more. “After all, we both love the same guy and have a lot in common.” I wasn’t terribly sure I had anything in common with a Grand Duchess, or ever had, apart from us both being hopelessly in love with Forts. “Here, would you like to feel the little prince kicking?” I nodded. She placed my open hand on her tummy. Her eyes totally focused on mine. “There, did you feel that?” I had. It took me back to my mum, standing talking with our pregnant neighbour. She had let me feel the baby kicking too. Unfortunately, I had missed that with Andrew. I hadn’t even known mum was pregnant, not until Forts and I had seen her pushing a pram. A lifetime ago now. It suddenly hit me what she had said. “How do you know it is a little boy? It could be a little princess.” “Davy, please, I am sorry, even Forts doesn’t know, I had to have blood tests, because of the possibility of the Romanov curse.” “Curse?” “Davy, you mustn’t say anything, it is a state secret, the young Tsarevich Alexei, Tsar Nicholas’s heir, has haemophilia. The Grand Duke insisted they check me for it. He had seen how it affected the Tsar’s family life and didn’t want that to happen to me. They gave the baby the all clear, the silly doctor saying I was carrying a perfectly healthy baby boy.” She stroked her tummy again. I felt a lump rising in my throat. “And Forts doesn’t know?” Theodora shook her head. She gripped my hands tighter, real angst in her eyes. Shaking her head again, “No, I don’t want him to know, he has made his choice, I don’t want to influence that.” Now my mind was racing, how could I keep a secret like this? She continued. “And there is another thing. Davy, I don’t want to be a mother. The very thought of raising a child fills me with loathing. I want you to make me a promise.” She fixed her eyes on me. “Please!” Her hands squeezed mine even tighter. “A promise? What do you want me to promise? That I won’t tell Forts it’s a little boy? Is that what you mean?” She shook her head. “Oh Davy, you’re so sweet, but no, I want you to agree to raise him with Forts, up at the Castle.” My face must have said it all, I was sure my mouth had fallen open in shock. “You want Forts and me to raise him? Your baby?” She gave a little smile. “Well, you mainly, I know what Forts is like, you are so much more responsible.” I am sure I was shaking my head. “But Theodora!” She slipped off the bench and dropped to her knees; I leapt up and took her hands, as she pressed mine to her head. “Davy, please, you have to promise me!” ** Forts picks up the story Dima and I strode along the path towards the fountain. “Come on Dima, let’s find out what these two are plotting.” Dima gave a little laugh, then his face changed. He glanced at me. I followed his eyes as he broke into a run. Theodora was on the ground on her knees by the fountain, Davy trying to help her up. Dima and I arrived about the same time, as I shouted at some staff nearby to bring a chair. I heard Dima. “Sister! Theodora, are you okay? Are you okay?” Theodora was slapping away his hands. “Dima, I am fine, stop fussing, I was just speaking to Davy.” Dima glared at Davy and then looked back at Theodora. “Why are you on your knees, did you fall?” “Dima, no, I am fine, honestly!” She turned back to Davy, “Now promise me!” Davy glanced at me. To be honest, I thought he looked shocked about something. He nodded quickly. Theodora broke into a big smile. I put my hand on Davy’s back. “Come on, spill the beans, what is she making you promise?” Theodora’s eyes made daggers at Davy; she obviously thought I hadn’t seen, she reinforced it by shaking her head. Turning to me, she chuckled. “Secret girlie stuff.” “Oh, so you and Davy have your secrets now, do you?” Dima gave a little laugh. “Did you hear that Dima? The two of them have secrets now.” “The chair you called for, your Imperial Highness.” Theodora looked up at me, shaking her head. “Theodora, are you sure?” She settled herself on the stone bench. “I am sure.” I looked at the footman. “Thank you, but it is not needed anymore.” The footman looked at me. What could I do but nod. As he turned away, I added, “Thank you for being so quick.” He turned back and gave a bow of his head. “Thank you, you’re welcome, your Imperial Highness.” Davy squeezed my hand. “That took him by surprise. I don’t think anyone has thanked him before.” “No, you’re right, I will be making a few changes round here.” I felt Dima’s eyes on me again. I glanced at him, unsure if he agreed. He nodded, adding. “Yes Forts.” Theodora stood up. She gave a little wince as she supported her tummy. Smiling to us all, she leant in and gave Davy a kiss on the cheek. I was sure she whispered something too, but couldn’t make it out. “Right, I am going to leave you Gentlemen. I will see you all at dinner.” Theodora turned to head back to the Manor. “Don’t I get a kiss too?” She glanced back over her shoulder escort ankara and smiled. “No, you have Davy for that.” Dima laughed as I called after her. “But that’s not fair.” Another giggle from Theodora, then she stopped and looked back. “You had your chance. Oh Forts, is it okay if my mother and the Grand Duchess join us for dinner tonight?” “Yes, of course, can you let the chamberlain know?” Another laugh. “Tell him yourself.” Dima and Davy began laughing. Dima grinned; he couldn’t stop the words falling from his mouth. “That’s you told Prince.” I had to laugh too. ** Athol continues the story I had told Archie to pack, we were catching the train to London in the morning. I glanced out the window, taking a quick break, as I tried to get everything in order before we left. Archie came back into the room; I returned his smile. “Is everything ready?” He nodded, “Yes, all done.” “Great, thank you. I shouldn’t be much longer. It’s about time for a quick dram. I know I could use one.” Archie had just walked to the drinks cabinet. I looked back at my papers. Leaping out of my skin as the phone next to me rang, I snatched at the receiver handle. “Hello, Fraser Castle, his Lordship speaking. Forts, it’s you! Son, what’s going on? Are Davy and Niki there? Why haven’t you rung? Archie and I have been worried sick!” Archie practically landed in my lap. I moved the receiver between both of our ears. “Forts, slow down. Mum’s listening too. Ouch, oi, sorry, mum just punched me. What’s been happening? Why haven’t you rung? Are Davy and Niki okay?” “Dad, hi mum. It was a Russian thing, no contacting anyone during the mourning period. Then the telephone exchange was bombed, and we had no phones at the Manor.” “What about Davy and Niki?” “Davy and Niki are here, Davy says he will speak after me. Yes, they are both fine. We nearly lost Niki though.” “You nearly lost Niki? What in London?” “No, dad on the end of a soldier’s bayonet!” “A bayonet?” “I will explain all in a couple of days. But he is fine now. Oh Dad, I have missed you and mum and your guidance. We can’t wait to come back to the Castle.” “Forts, we were coming down tomorrow to make sure everything was okay.” “Dad, honestly, there is no need. We will head back in a few more days. Mishcon is keeping me on top of everything and I have asked Dima to become my private secretary and equerry. I will never keep up with all this stuff on my own.” “Can I trust Dima?” “Dad, what a thing to say.” “Well Forts, it was his father that left you into a load of mess.” “Dad please, look, Davy wants to speak. I will see you in a couple of days. Stay where you are. We will be fine.” “Okay son, as you wish, remember we both love you. Yes, put Davy on. Davy Hi.” We both chatted with Davy for a few minutes, then reluctantly ended the call. I turned to Archie. “Thank God they are all safe. Well, looks like I don’t have to rush this lot after all, how about that drink?” Archie poured us two large Whiskys, then came and sat on my desk. He held up his glass. I did likewise, the crystal ringing as we tapped them together. “To Forts and Davy. Slange.” ** Davy continues the story. It had been great speaking to Athol and Archie. I wished Forts hadn’t put them off coming down though. I joined Marcus in the walk-in closet. Thank God my clothes had arrived. Marcus had unpacked them for me, he joined me as I stood staring at what I had with me. “Come on then, what can I wear for this bloody dinner?” He stared silently before shaking his head. “Well, none of this, you can’t wear a funeral suit to dinner, or shorts.” “So?” “Let me speak to Dima. I am sure he has at least two dinner jackets here. Failing that, maybe one of Forts’. We could always pin it in a bit. You’re not as big as he is in the chest. Give me a few minutes.” I walked back into the main room. Forts was sitting with Mishcon again. He stood up as I appeared. “Davy, is everything okay?” “Yeah, Marcus is just trying to sort out something for me to wear to this meal tonight.” “Didn’t you bring anything suitable?” “FORTS! I own nothing suitable! I am not loaded like you.” He stood, his mouth open. I had hurt him. Why had Theodora lumbered me with two secrets? They were tearing at me. Forts turned to Mishcon. “Mishcon, can we continue tomorrow please, thank you.” Mishcon gathered up his papers and gave a small bow before leaving. I waited until the door had closed before speaking. “Forts, I didn’t mean to upset you, sorry.” He stepped forward and hugged me. “Right, we are going to my tailor before we go back and rectifying this.” “Forts!” “Davy stop, this money is ours, not just mine, okay?” The room door opened, and Marcus came in, waving a white dinner jacket and trousers. “Problem solved. Oops, sorry, am I interrupting something?” I shook my head as Forts held me. Marcus continued. “Dima has lent you this. Forts, it just means you have to wear your silver one again. I will get them all ready for you both and let everyone know the meal is now formal. That should cause a panic.” Marcus chuckled and vanished into his room, muttering. “I had better iron this.” * I gripped Fort’s arm; tightly. To the crash of the Chamberlain’s staff on the floor, the doors to the dining room opened before ankara escort bayan us. “His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke Drageon Drageonivanov, and Mr Davy Thomas.” I winked up at Forts. “Wow, I didn’t know they were coming too. They sound important.” Forts raised his eyebrows. “Come on, let’s get this over with and I can get you back in bed.” The guests at the table all stood behind their chairs as we approached. Forts was to be at the head of the table, Dima to one side and the dowager Grand Duchess Truorwskoy on his other, the rest of us filling the remaining seats. “Davy, you are here next to me.” Theodora moved the chair next to her, I felt my heart sink. What was this woman up to? I forced a smile and joined her. We all waited, Forts stood watching us. I could see in his eyes he did not understand why everyone had remained standing. He looked at me, I could see the question in his eyes. I gave a little dip of my bottom, nodding at him, my eyes indicating he was to sit first. His face changed; I saw the devilment in his eyes, as he chuckled. “Well, I am happy to eat standing up. Please, all sit. Either way, I am not sitting first.” I had to smile at the confused or was it shocked faces round the table. Dima leant into him; Forts held up his hand. “No Dima, this changes too.” Everyone remained standing until Theodora announced. “Well, I am not standing up to eat.” And sat herself down, the rest of the table followed and then Forts sat too, he looked over and winked at me. My bum was barely on the seat when Theodora grabbed my knee and leant into my ear. “You haven’t told him, have you?” “No, I haven’t. But Theodora, I don’t think I can keep this secret from him, what will he think when he finds out I knew?” “Davy, you promised.” She was right; I had. The meal was amazing, really out of this world. I mentioned this to the dowager Grand Duchess. She smiled and nodded. “Yes, Bruno has excelled himself, and so has little Niki, he has been helping in the kitchens all day.” “Our Niki?” She nodded again. “Forts, you must get them brought here so we can all say thank you.” I gave him a wink. He caught on straight away. Turning to the chamberlain, he told him to have the chefs and kitchen staff brought through. More shocked faces round the table. A few minutes later, Bruno, in his chef’s whites, Niki and several other kitchen staff came in and hurriedly lined up. Niki spotted me and waved madly earning himself a stiff rebuke from the chamberlain. Forts stood. The rest of us followed. He shook his head in exasperation, then walked towards Theodora and me. I was sure he was going to pull back her chair. Looking at her face, I am sure she thought he was going to too, but he stopped behind me and pulled back mine. “Come on Davy.” There was silence again and more than one look. Forts offered me his arm and led me over to the kitchen staff. He stopped, smiled at me, and turned back to the table. “One minute Davy. Dima, can you join us, please?” Dima hurried over; Forts spoke again. “I want you to hear this.” Forts turned to face the kitchen staff once more. “Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for an amazing meal.” He then walked down the line, beckoning me to join him and together we shook hands and thanked them all personally. I even managed to have a few words with Niki. “Are you having fun?” He nodded and grabbed Bruno’s arm who blushed a deep shade of pink. There was a “Hmmmf” from the end of the line-up. Niki let go and timidly looked down at the chamberlain. I bent to speak to him, winking. “Well, thank you. Both of you, you must have lunch with us tomorrow, okay?” Niki and Bruno both nodded. There was another “Hmmmf” from the chamberlain, who was standing at the end of the line. Obviously awaiting his thanks, too, he had his hands clasped and his head bowed as he smiled obsequiously in response to my glance. Forts stopped in front of him and called Dima to his side. Forts then turned back to the smiling chamberlain. “Chamberlain, I never want to hear you speaking to a member of my staff like that again.” Forts waved Niki over and put his arm round his shoulder. “Do I make myself clear? Dima, I want you to ensure this man understands. If I receive one complaint about his heavy handedness, or that he has been rude to any of my staff again, it is he who will be looking for a new job. Not them! Do I make myself clear?” Dima bowed, glaring at the chamberlain. “Yes, Prince.” I had just witnessed yet another change at the Manor. ********************** Folks, I really hope you’re enjoying the story.
